Programs

The Programs ICEA offers:

Educational Programs in remote schools
Remote Schools/Communities: One Arm Point, Djarindjin/Lombadina, Beagle Bay, Jigalong

  • Educational programs in all remote communities are focused at increasing attendance, predominantly through incentive schemes.

Kickstart incentive Program

  • When students achieve attendance rates of greater than 85% for the term they receive an incentive reward; Basketball, Football, Toys, Books etc
  • Has been running since 2009 and had great success:
  • Attendance has jumped from less that 50% of kids achieving 85% to maintaining greater than 70% from 2010.

KickStart gardens program:

  • Recently established partnership with Eon foundation and all participating communities
  • Paramount safety (Pro-Choice safety gear) is providing all equipment to:
  • "Eon Edible Gardens" garden coordinators with gardening equipment bi-annually.
  • 2 students from each class who are most actively involved with the Eon edible gardens at the end of each term receive a gardening pack including gloves and a variety of goodies from Pro-choice along with seeds provided by Eon foundation.

Metropolitan Schools: Christ Church Grammar School, Scotch College, St'Hildas Anglican School for Girls, Presbyterian Ladies College, Iona, Hale school, John XX111 and Methodist Ladies College

  • Educational programs are focused on raising indigenous awareness within the community.

NAIDOC events:

  • All schools involved with ICEA are required to celebrate NAIDOC week
  • Celebrate indigenous culture and heritage in the school throughout the week
  • Hold cultural activities throughout the week
  • Invite elders and indigenous students to talk at assembley and organise weeks activities.

Awareness Raisers:

  • All schools involved with ICEA are required to hold an awareness raising event within their community.
  • Events are focused on raising awareness through celebrating indigenous culture and encouraging integration between the two cultures.

Educational Programs in metro Community

Marja Mob -Bardi Language for Boss-man or leader in the community

  • All event coordinators and organisers for the school educational programs are part of this group.
  • The group extends to 150 indigenous and non-indigenous members
  • Networking group for teens passionate about indigenous affairs
  • Skills building workshops to increase productivity and effectiveness
  • Cultural awareness raising; through holding several indigenous awareness raising seminars, held by elders.

Mentor Marja Mob - The body of experienced ICEA representatives that act as mentors to the Marja mob

  • There is at least one Mentor Marja Mob member for each participating school
  • These individuals are responsible for setting deadlines on events
  • Assisting with activities on the day of fundraisers or NAIDOC events
  • Attend all Marja Mob sessions

Awareness raising events in Community:
ICEA Waves Program

  • Focuses on engaging surfing community to understand and appreciate indigenous culture
  • Breaking down cultural barriers through using sport
  • Surf workshops in patnership with local Surf Life Saving clubs

ICEA CLASSIC:

  • Annual event in July/August
  • Youth surfing comp U18 event
  • Encourages indigenous Australians to learn to surf and Surf life Saving activities
  • Breaks down cultural barriers through working together with sport

Gjinanging Art exhibitions: Gjinanging is a Noongar word describing an item of value

  • Art exhibitions that ICEA hold to develop greater indigenous art appreciation and understanding in the community.
  • Target adult network within ICEA
  • Broader cross cultural awareness program to involve parents in ICEA network
